Trenchless methods
Sewer line repair and replacement in Grand Rapids when lining is not an option
Some sewer laterals in Grand Rapids cannot be lined: a deep belly, a long collapse, a broken connection at the main. This page covers the repair and replacement choices that remain, from a single excavation over the defect to full trenchless replacement, and how to weigh restoration, permits and time.
When lining is off the table
Cured-in-place lining is the first thing a vetted installer considers for a Grand Rapids lateral, and this site says so repeatedly. But a liner conforms to the host pipe, and some host pipes are beyond conforming to. A belly, where a section of pipe has settled below grade and holds water, stays a belly after lining and keeps collecting solids. A collapse that stops the camera cannot be lined through. A joint offset by half the pipe diameter will not take a liner without a fold. A lateral that has pulled away from the main leaves nothing at the end for the liner to seal against. Each of those is a replacement problem at that location, and the question becomes how to replace it with the least damage above.
Spot excavation: one hole, one fix
When the footage and the surface locate show the defect under lawn or a planting bed, the simplest answer is to dig to it. The crew excavates a pit over the defect, shores it if the depth requires, cuts out the failed section, lays new pipe to grade with proper bedding, connects to the sound pipe on either side with shielded couplings, and has the connection inspected before backfill. In frost-depth cities the pit may be deep, which raises the cost of shoring and spoil handling but does not change the method. A Grand Rapids spot excavation is often combined with lining the rest of the run: dig and re-lay the belly, then line from the house to the main through the new section.
Trenchless replacement or open trench
When the defects are long, repeated or under hard surfaces, the choice is between pipe bursting, which pulls new HDPE through the old alignment from two pits, and an open trench, which removes the old pipe along its full length. Bursting preserves driveways, slabs, trees and sidewalks. Open trenching gives direct access to correct grade over a long distance, which bursting cannot do, and is the only option when the alignment itself must change, for instance to clear a new addition or a footing. Many Grand Rapids replacements end up as a hybrid: trench the section where grade has to be rebuilt, burst the rest.
- Spot excavation: one defect under soft surface, grade correction possible
- Pipe bursting: long runs under hard surfaces, same alignment, upsizing possible
- Open trench: grade rebuilt over distance, alignment changed, full access
- Hybrid: trench where grade or alignment demands it, trenchless elsewhere
Restoration: what the yard looks like afterward
The cost that separates methods is rarely the pipe. It is the concrete driveway that has to be saw-cut and poured back, the sidewalk panel that the city requires replaced to its standard, the mature tree whose roots cannot be severed without killing it, the landscaping and the lawn. An owner comparing quotes for a Grand Rapids replacement should ask each installer to list restoration separately, so the comparison between an open trench and two pits is visible rather than buried in a total.
Working under the street and in the right-of-way
Many laterals run a long way under public pavement before they reach the main, and the connection at the main is a common failure point. Work there requires a right-of-way or street opening permit from Grand Rapids or from Kent County, a traffic control plan, pavement restoration to the agency's specification, and usually an inspection of the new connection before it is covered. Some utilities take responsibility for the lateral from the curb or property line to the main; others leave it with the owner. The installer should establish which applies before writing the scope, since it changes both the price and who signs the permit.
Choosing with the footage and the site plan
The decision is made by laying the camera footage over the surface: each defect by distance, each distance located and marked, each mark checked against what sits above it. From that, the installer writes a scope that names the method for each section and the restoration for each surface. Installers qualified for both excavation and trenchless work are listed at the roster of verified installers and can be filtered through a search for crews serving Grand Rapids; the background on lining and replacement standards is at the CIPP reference library. Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement
What makes a sewer line impossible to line?+
A liner needs a continuous host pipe with reasonable grade. A belly that holds standing water, a collapse the camera cannot pass, a joint offset by more than a fraction of the pipe diameter, or a connection at the main that has separated all rule it out at that location. The rest of the Grand Rapids lateral may still be lined once the bad section is replaced.
How big is the hole for a spot excavation?+
Large enough for a worker to reach the pipe safely, typically a few feet long and wide and as deep as the pipe, which in northern cities with deep frost lines can be six to eight feet. Shoring is required beyond a certain depth. The hole is backfilled and compacted the same day in most cases, with surface restoration following.
Who repairs the part of the lateral under the street in Grand Rapids?+
Responsibility varies by utility. In many places the owner is responsible all the way to the main; in others the utility takes over at the curb or property line. The installer will confirm the local rule with Grand Rapids or Kent County before scoping work in the right-of-way, and the permit application will reflect it.
How long is my sewer out of service during replacement?+
For a spot excavation, usually one working day. For a trenchless replacement by bursting, one to two days once pits are open. For a full open trench, several days depending on length and surface. During the work the building's drains are shut, and the crew should tell you the exact hours in advance.
How do I decide between digging and trenchless replacement?+
Start with the camera footage, then map each defect to the surface above it. Defects under lawn may be cheapest to dig; defects under concrete, trees or the street favor trenchless. Call (877) 880-8125 for an inspection and a written comparison of the options. Estimates are free; call now.
