Cured-in-place sewer pipe lining in Grand Rapids

Lining replaces the inside of a sewer lateral without removing the outside. For Grand Rapids owners this page covers which pipes qualify, what the crew does between the first camera run and the last, how the resin is cured, and what the warranty should say.

Which Grand Rapids laterals are good candidates

Lining works when the old pipe can act as a form. Clay tile with open joints and root intrusion is the classic case, and most of the pre-1970 housing stock in Grand Rapids has exactly that. Cast iron under a slab or basement floor with heavy scaling and a thinning bottom lines well once cleaned, and the liner stops the corrosion where it stands. Orangeburg that has begun to deform but still passes a camera can often be stabilized by a liner before it collapses. PVC with a few broken joints or a crushed section is lined less often, because it tends to fail at single points better handled by a sleeve.

The disqualifiers are a collapse the camera cannot pass, a belly deep enough to hold a standing pool, or a pipe with so many offsets that the liner would wrinkle. Those sections are dug out or burst, and the rest of the run is lined. Owners sometimes hear that a pipe is too old to line; age is not the test, shape and continuity are.

Cleaning, measuring and preparing the resin

The liner is only as good as the surface it bonds to. The crew jets the lateral to remove roots, grease and scale, then runs the camera again to confirm the wall is clean and to measure the length from the access point to the end of the lining run. Diameter is confirmed with a gauge, because a nominal four-inch clay pipe and a four-inch cast iron pipe are not the same inside. The felt or fiberglass tube is cut to length, saturated with resin on site or delivered pre-saturated and chilled, and loaded into the inversion unit. On a Grand Rapids job this stage usually occupies the morning.

Installation and cure: hot water, steam or UV

Most residential liners are inverted, meaning the tube is turned inside out by air or water pressure so the resin side presses against the host pipe as it travels down the lateral. Some systems are pulled in instead. Once in place the resin is cured. Hot water circulated through the liner is the oldest approach and tolerant of long runs. Steam cures faster and is common on laterals. Ultraviolet cure uses a fiberglass liner and a light train and offers tight control of cure time with no heat. Each has a manufacturer's procedure for temperature, pressure and duration, and the installer should be certified on the specific system in the truck.

Reinstating connections and the final video

Where a basement bathroom, a kitchen stack or a second building ties into the lateral, the liner seals those openings during cure. A robotic cutter is then sent in and each connection is reopened under camera. The run is recorded end to end, and that recording, along with the pre-lining video, belongs to the owner. In a typical Grand Rapids house the drains are back in service that evening.

Design life, standards and the written warranty

CIPP liners are designed for about fifty years of service, a figure based on material testing of the cured resin and on the structural design of the liner thickness for the pipe's depth and groundwater. That design basis and the product standards installers are expected to meet are set out at the CIPP reference. The written warranty should name the exact footage lined and what is promised if it fails. Installers who have been verified against those standards appear at the directory of verified lining installers, and the process by which they are checked is explained at the network's verification standards.

Permits and the ground in Grand Rapids

Because a liner is installed from a cleanout rather than a trench, it often avoids a right-of-way permit, but the plumbing permit remains and the lateral connection may still be inspected under Kent County rules. In northern cities with deep frost lines, lining is attractive precisely because it avoids digging six or eight feet down in a frozen yard, and liners are installed year round. Long laterals to a main under the street are lined in one run from the house side. To find out whether your Grand Rapids lateral qualifies, call (877) 880-8125. Estimates are free. Call now.

Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)

Does lining reduce the pipe diameter enough to matter?+

A liner takes a fraction of an inch off the inside diameter of a four- or six-inch lateral. Because the finished surface is smooth and jointless, flow capacity is as good as or better than the rough, root-filled pipe it replaced. Capacity is only a concern on an already undersized line, where bursting with upsizing is the better choice.

Can a lateral with branch connections be lined?+

Yes. The liner covers the branch openings during installation, and the technician reopens each one from inside with a robotic cutter guided by camera. The locations are recorded before lining so none are missed. A Grand Rapids house with a basement bathroom tying in partway along the lateral is a routine case.

How is the liner cured, and does it smell?+

Resin cures by heat or light. Hot water or steam is circulated through the inverted liner for a set time; UV systems pull a light train through a fiberglass liner. Some styrene-based resins produce a noticeable odor during cure that dissipates by the next day. Ask which resin is proposed if odor is a concern.

What does the lining warranty actually cover in Kent County?+

A written warranty should name the footage of pipe lined, the period covered, and what the installer will do if the liner fails. It covers the liner and its installation, not the sections of old pipe that were not lined, so make sure the scope and the warranty describe the same length.

How do I find out if my Grand Rapids lateral can be lined?+

A camera inspection answers it. The technician checks that the pipe is continuous, measures its diameter and length, and looks for bellies or collapses that would rule lining out. Call (877) 880-8125 to schedule one. Estimates are free; call now.
